A question I hear A LOT, is “Why Young Living essential oils?” Well, for me, the short answer is purity, integrity and transparency. It’s the Seed to Seal promise. Before I was introduced to Young Living essential oils I used to buy a brand sold at an online herb store and at my local health food store. I bought them because my family went fully organic in 2012 and those particular oils I bought had a USDA organic label on them.
One day, I was alerted to the fact that these oils were not exactly what I bargained for; they were being sold as fragrance, and even the USDA organic peppermint oil had a warning not to use it internally. Upon further investigation at the FDA’s website, I learned that those oils could be labeled organic if the oil component of the liquid was from organic plants, but that they could add other ingredients (such as synthetic fragrances) without disclosing those ingredients since that is proprietary information. There is something called the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act (FPLA) which says that ingredients must be labeled on packages, however “This law is not allowed to be used to force a company to tell ‘trade secrets.'” and according to the FDA’s website, “Fragrance and flavor formulas are complex mixtures of many different natural and synthetic chemical ingredients, and they are the kinds of cosmetic components that are most likely to be ‘trade secrets.'”
Because of the way essential oils are treated by the FDA, it is SUPER important to know where your oils are coming from. See the picture at the top of this post? That’s where my clary sage comes from. 🙂 (Pardon the quality; I took all of these pics on my phone because I forgot my hubby’s DSLR at home.) I just got back from Utah a few days ago where I got to visit the Young Living family farms in Mona. While I was there I got to see fields of lavender, clary sage, melissa, german chamomile, goldenrod, yarrow and more. I can’t even begin to tell you how yummy it smelled. So fresh and filled with an aliveness! Good vibes for sure.
My friends and I also visited the distillery while they were distilling juniper and blue yarrow, and we saw the bottling plant.
If you ever happen to be cruising down I-15 through Mona, Utah, please do yourself a favor and stop at the farm. It’s family friendly, gorgeous and it even has a cool visitor’s center where you can buy stuff and take it home right then. Who doesn’t love instant gratification?
I mean really, how pretty is this place?!
The beautiful thing is, you don’t have to be a Young Living member to visit it either. You can tour the greenhouses, walk through the fields, watch the distillation process and even watch them bottle the oils. While I was there I even got to help plant some yarrow, which was awesome. What other essential oil company in the world offers that kind of transparency? This, my friends, is why I choose Young Living for myself and for my family.
If you’d like to hear more about the Seed to Seal promise, you can check out the Seed to Seal website. If you’re not yet a Young Living wholesale member, what are you waiting for?! Go grab your Premium Starter kit and I’ll help get you rollin with the oily life. If you get confused during the sign up process (remember: you have to choose the *first* option that says “save 24%” to get a kit), give me a call and I’ll walk you through it. My phone number is (760) 658-0655 and my member number for the enroller/sponsor fields is 3471989. I hope you enjoyed learning a little bit about Young Living and one of its many farms. I hope to connect with you soon!
This morning when I was driving Jeffrey bean to school Chloe was lamenting the fact that her birthday is 4 months away. “It’s gonna take sooooo long,” she whined, “I WISH it could already be October!” Jeffrey (age 7) looked very thoughtfully at her and said “You know, you shouldn’t wish your days away. Just be thankful. Today is a gift. That’s why it’s called the present.” I think this tidbit of wisdom was lost on little Chloe, but it had a profound impact on me and I can’t stop thinking about it. I so needed to hear that today. Maybe some of you do too, which is why I’m sharing. Be blessed, my friends.
Vista, Ca not only boasts some of the mildest weather on Earth but it is also home to one of San Diego’s best farmers markets. With 53 different farms sharing their fresh, local produce, 18 plus artisans selling their wares and numerous food vendors, the Vista farmers market is definitely one of the better farmers markets north county has to offer. The Vista farmers market takes place every Saturday in the parking lot of the San Diego County Courthouse Complex which is located at 345 South Melrose Drive, Vista, CA 92083. Conveniently located just south of the 78 freeway, the Vista market is open from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m., rain or shine.
Once a month the Vista farmers market hosts the Vista Wellness Fair, an event featuring local experts, healthcare providers and wellness products which can help you and your family explore alternative methods of achieving optimal health. Last month The Joyful Oilers hosted our first Young Living essential oils booth at the Vista Wellness Fair, and—despite the unexpected rain that day—we liked it so much we decided to make it a regular thing. We went back again yesterday and had a wonderful time chatting with other Vista locals.
It was a gorgeous June day. The sun shone brightly but the sea breezes kept the temperature beautifully moderate. We brought along gorgeous diffuser jewelry by our dear friend and fellow oiler Alex Rymal, who specializes in upcycled vintage jewelry. She is a true artist in every sense of the word! We offered brand new essential oil customers their choice of diffuser necklace or diffuser earrings when they purchased their Premium Starter Kit from us, plus some other goodies to help get them rollin with the oily life. We hook our people up. 😉 Aren’t these pieces gorgeous?!
The Joyful Oilers will definitely be returning to the Vista Farmers Market Wellness Fair. For the remainder of the year this event will be taking place on the 3rd Saturday of the month, so the next one will be held on Saturday July 16th, 2016. 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Come out to see us! We love talking essential oils, wellness, or anything really. We love meeting new people. 🙂 If you’re not already using Young Living essential oils, this event is also a great place to grab your premium starter kit since we usually throw in fun extras (like diffuser jewelry loaded with the oil of your choice!) Plus you get to take home our exclusive essential oil handbook so you can start learning all about your oils even before your kit arrives. Well, I hope we get to meet face to face soon, if we haven’t already! In the mean time, let’s connect on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram, or if you’re local to San Diego county, let’s grab a smoothie or something. Stay oily, my friends.
Last night I hosted a couple of The Joyful Oilers and a few of their friends for a ladies’ night in featuring chocolate, wine and the best essential oils on Earth. We had ladies from Oceanside, Vista, Carlsbad, La Jolla and the greater San Diego area. It was a delight for the senses. We had the diffuser going and we had a variety of organic wines to choose from. I sipped on red wine infused with Lime Vitality and Orange Vitality essential oils, which made for a tasty sangria like beverage. I baked Peppermint Vitality infused brownies and organic, gluten free, dairy free chocolate chip cookies. The cookies were also grain free and vegan, but you’d never know it. I made a yummy cheesecake dip infused with Lemon Vitality essential oil for our organic fruit, and of course we had a cheese platter. There were many chocolates to choose from, and we had some savory snacks to break up all of the sweetness. It was a super yummy night.
We talked about why we choose Young Living essential oils over all the other brands on the market, because of their Seed to Seal guarantee, the fact that they own their own organic farms and their transparency. We talked about how the FDA treats essential oils as “fragrance” under the larger umbrella of “cosmetics” so even essential oils labeled as USDA organic can contain ingredients other than essential oils and they don’t have to disclose it. Oils sold as “fragrance” are exempt under the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act (FPLA) because “This law is not allowed to be used to force a company to tell ‘trade secrets.’ Fragrance and flavor formulas are complex mixtures of many different natural and synthetic chemical ingredients, and they are the kinds of cosmetic components that are most likely to be ‘trade secrets.’” This is why it is so important to know and trust your source, especially if you intend to use these products on your body or in your food. Please, please, PLEASE do not ingest essential oils you buy at the store. In fact, most oils you buy at the store (even “organic” ones) will say right on the label “NOT FOR INTERNAL USE” and this is because they are sold as fragrance.
Young Living is the only company to have a line of essential oils made specifically for ingestion. They have the Vitality line, a line of essential oils bottled and labeled for dietary use. They are FDA approved as dietary supplements, something other essential oil companies cannot say. Hint: this is what I used to create some of the yummy treats I made for last night’s chocolate, oils and wine night.
Speaking of yummy treats, I’ll share with you one of the recipes I created for last night’s event. Here is my Peppermint Vitality infused brownie recipe:
-1 cup organic unbleached all-purpose flour
-3/4 cup organic Dutch-process cocoa
-2 cups sugar
-1/4 teaspoon salt*
-1/4 teaspoon baking powder
-1 teaspoon espresso powder
-3 large eggs
-1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted
-1/4 cup melted coconut oil
-2 teaspoons vanilla extract
-4 drops Peppermint Vitality essential oil
*Increase the salt to 1/2 teaspoon if you use unsalted butter.
If you’re not into baking stuff from scratch or if you have dietary restrictions, you can always use your favorite box mix and add your drops of Peppermint Vitality essential oil to your own batter before baking. We won’t tell. 😉
So all in all, last night was pretty awesome, so much so that The Joyful Oilers are already planning the next one in June. If you are local to the greater San Diego area and want to come to the next one, get in touch with your favorite Joyful Oiler for all of the details. Or if you’d like to host one in your own home with your own friends, let me know and I can help you out with that too. Thanks for reading! xoxo
I haven’t been on social media much lately, except for the daily Instagram post sharing the Oil a Day Giveaway. More on that later! Spring has been busy busy for me. I am so grateful for my Young Living income because it has allowed me the flexibility to be as involved with my kids’ school as I want to be, which this year has been quite a lot. I am our Waldorf school’s Chat ‘n Craft lady, which is awesome because it serves as a creative outlet and allows me to socialize with a lot of other awesome mamas. I also do a lot of sewing for the nursery kindergarten and 1st grade classes, which I love.
Recently I got to volunteer to help the kiddos with flower crown making for May Faire. I love love love floral crowns—for myself—but especially on sweet kiddos. May Faire is one of my favorite Waldorf festivals because we have the opportunity to reconnect with our greater community and rejoice in the fertility of a new season. We gather to make floral crowns and then the older children weave the ribbons in a rainbow of colors around the May Pole, symbolizing the renewal of our connections to each other, weaving a stronger, healthier community. It’s beautiful to watch. Here is a video one of the parents took of this year’s festival:
Then we had Mother’s Day Tea, Mother’s Day and all month long (actually for a few months) me and several other moms busied ourselves with preparations for our fun glamping inspired fundraising soiree. My friend and I made play teepees and embroidered flannel blankets. A larger group of us made a ton of pretty dream catchers, felt toys, miniatures for fairy gardens, whimsical fairy garden baskets and so many other fun, crafty things.
The night was magical, but now that it is over I can get back to sharing with all of you my love of all things essential oils.
I mentioned above that I have been posting an Oil A Day Giveaway on Instagram. One of my dearest friends (and incidentally the one who introduced me to Young Living oils) heads an essential oil education group called Drop Talk on Facebook where people can go to learn how to incorporate oils into their daily lives. She bought a Premier Aroma Collection from Young Living, a collection containing 120 bottles of oily goodness, and she has been giving away one bottle a day. She will continue to give bottles away until the entire collection is gone. Amazing, right?! She is the kindest, most generous lady I know, but I digress. The point of this giveaway is to educate people on various essential oils and their uses. Every morning (except Sundays) Jessica posts a picture of the oil she is giving away with the name blurred out and a description of that oil. This goes down in our secret FB group. If you guess correctly on the photo your name goes into a drawing for that oil, and she announces the winners the next day. We have shipped off 37 oils so far, and in case you’re wondering, this giveaway is open world-wide. Here are some of the oils we’ve given away so far:
These are all of the oils that will be given away when it’s all said and done:
Rose?! Frankincense?! Yeah, this is pretty epic. If you’d like to participate, go ahead and friend me on Facebook and let me know you’d like to be added to Drop Talk, the essential oil education group. Then you can jump right in and start guessing. This group is a pretty useful tool for learning all things oily, and it’s great because there’s no selling in there; it’s just oil education, and right now, LOTS of giveaways. We’re on oil #38 today, and remember, there are 120 oils total! Get in there and good luck to you. I hope to connect with you soon. Thanks for reading my friends, and enjoy what’s left of May! As for me, tonight I celebrate 14 years of marriage with the love of my life, so I am going to go get dolled up and enjoy him and these roses he just brought me. Beautiful, wonderful May. 🙂
